The U17 SBHS Gold team topped off a great season by winning the U17 A Grade CBA Winter Basketball competition. The team had a record of 13 wins and 2 losses throughout the season.
The team was made up of 7 Year 12s – Liam Marshall, Jack Cockburn, Jacob Woodrow, Tequan Taurerewa, Jed Taylor, Kane Arona and Connor Lynn and 3 year 11s – Riley Stevenson, Tavita Tuliau and Cooper Shanks. They were coached by Glen Stevenson.
The U17 team qualified for the Semi-Finals and came up against Cashmere. In a strong team effort, the Shirley team came away with an impressive 112 – 90 win. The Year 12s lead the way – Liam Marshall 31, Connor Lynn 18, Jack Cockburn 16, Jed Taylor 14, Kane Arona 12, Jacob Woodrow 11, and Tequan Taurerewa 6.
In the final the Shirley team faced a strong Horomaka (Hillmorton) team. The Shirley team battled hard through most of the game, and despite being down 9 points at halftime, an awesome 2nd half allowed the Shirley team to regain the U17 title that they held two years ago.
The final score was SBHS 72 – Horomaka 62
Jack Cockburn 19 led the scoring for Shirley, with Liam Marshall 18 and Jacob Woodrow 18 also having impressive games to help secure the win
Liam Marshall was named Finals MVP.
