Calling All SBHS Old Boys and Whānau – Help Us Launch Our Coding Club! 💻

Are you passionate about coding, ICT, or computer science? Want to make a real difference for our boys at Shirley Boys’ High School?

We’re on the lookout for a volunteer Old Boy or Parent/Whānau member to help us kickstart the SBHS Coding Club – starting with an exciting opportunity to prepare our students for Round 2 of the NZ Informatics Competition (NZIC), running 23–29 June.

We’ve had growing interest from students and whānau, and we’re ready to get this off the ground – we just need someone to help lead the way!

What we’re looking for:

  • Someone with a passion for coding or computer science

  • A willingness to support and supervise students during their 3-hour NZIC challenge (flexible times across the week)

  • Help with registering students and creating an encouraging space for them to compete and grow

What we’ll provide:

  • Full admin support (advertising, permission slips, logistics – you name it!)

  • A brand-new Spartan Sport top as a thank-you for your coaching mahi

  • Support from Nico Cook, our talented Year 12 student currently studying Computer Science at UC through the STAR Programme

Why get involved?
This is a fantastic chance to inspire the next generation of tech innovators at Shirley. The NZIC is a nationally recognised competition that provides a structured, low-maintenance entry point into coding. We believe there’s real potential to build a lasting club from this – but we need your help to get it started!
